Start With Art!

TRUE POSTER ART

The term “poster” art has commonly been used to refer to all open edition publications, however the strict definition refers to an art medium that was developed from the ancient practice of "posting" messages in public places. Posters were designed to communicate quickly and graphically and were used for advertising or other communication needs. Movies, concerts, plays and other public events all are promoted with posters today.

Famous posters today have become a popular art subject. There is always graphic type on a poster, which is the primary difference between these and other open edition reproductions.

Vintage posters were printed 50 to 100 years ago and are extremely highly collectable with a high investment value. These often are large and very graphic, with subject matter ranging from entertainment events to advertisements for products such as tobacco, wine and household items. Many early poster artists have become famous such as Cappiello, Steinlen, and Lautrec.

IT WORKS!
The Fine Art of Wall Design is Getting Great Reviews

Hi Suzanne,

I just wanted to let you know that Mark and I consulted your book several times tonight to find out how we should hang the mirrors we just bought and to move some art around in our house.

We placed one mirror above our sofa, read your book to make sure that was the right thing to do, realized from the book that it wasn’t, and then moved the mirror somewhere else! Anyway, just wanted to tell you your book helped us a lot tonight!

Cheers!  Wendy, Oregon

Placement Tip

Problem:
I hung a mirror, but it just didn’t do a thing but reflect the ceiling on the other side of the room!

Solution:
Always hang a mirror where it can reflect something beautiful!

Wall Design Diva 'Sightings'
The Fine Art of Wall Design was delivered to stores in late August of 2006. I had a ball sharing it’s debut with folks from Atlanta, GA to Camas, WA.

Kimberlee, Suzanne, Bev
Kim Jaynes, Suzanne Gallagher, Bev Landfair
First stop was in Atlanta where I gave a seminar to attendees of the DÉCOR EXPO, one of the largest shows for art and custom framing industry. There were a record 60 in attendance. One wonderful frame shop owner, Sally Crouse was so inspired that she decided to make a business decision to "do what I do" and work full time as an art consultant and Wall Design expert. Go Sally!

Next stop was in Vancouver, WA for a book signing at The Great Frame Up. Rob Boley, owner and manager went all out with a great terrific promotional campaign. I met some wonderful Wall Design Devotees. One savvy woman exclaimed, "I want you to know that I have researched art and how to use it in your interior spaces. There are no books available on the subject except this one!"

Then to Portland for the Landfair Furniture Gallery book signing and seminar. Bev Landfair owns a fabulous interior furnishings showroom, catering to the needs of interior designers in Vancouver, Portland and beyond. Thanks, Bev for hosting that event!

Kimberlee Jaynes, interior designer in the Portland area, featured in the book was on hand. Kim offers her expertise to clients including art and Wall Design. She works with me to provide the best in custom framing!

Beth Forsythe of LizzabethA in Camas, WA. hosted a sensational evening in her home furnishings store. She really knows how to “wow” her customers with food, wine and great entertainment! Her seminar series including The Fine Art of Wall Design-Everything In It’s Place are on everyone’s calendars. Beth carries the book, too!

The Fabric Gallery, Tualatin, OR. Is owned by Patty McKay who is famous for her amazing “sweet deals” on designer home decor fabrics. She can get just about anything but the bolts on the floor are amazing. We had a ball at her Fine Art of Wall Design Seminar!

Northwest Society of Interior Designers, one of my favorite organizations held their monthly meeting at the Attic Gallery in Portland where I was introduced. Thank you for your wonderful support, NWSID!

In January, I was a featured at the West Coast Art and Frame Show, Las Vegas. The terrific folks of Wild Apple Graphics hosted a book signing in their show booth. Many of their images are featured in The Fine Art of Wall Design. Check them out, great imagery!

Alta Matthaeus 1915 — 2006

  Alta Matthaeus
One of the very special people acknowledged in my book is my Mom, Alta Matthaeus. She passed away last November 18, just days before Thanksgiving.

She had struggled with swallowing issues and during a hospitalization for “bronchitis” in March of last year it was determined that she could no longer swallow safely. A stroke had caused her airway to be compromised. She elected to have a “G” tube (feeding tube) in her stomach, stating that, “if I don’t eat I’ll starve!” That was Alta, never give up!

Alta lived with dignity for 9 more months. She was a lady in every respect and loved her visits with all who came. She did not while away her hours watching television, but listened to radio (talk and music), meditated, and prayed. She could not talk very well, and reading was difficult, but she heard and understood everything and often expressed surprising insight! When I shared the advance copies of my book with her, she was so proud.

She slipped into unconsciousness and died within about two days. Her passing was peaceful. What a privilege it was to spend the last days of her life with her. She was a beautiful witness to all who met her. Even the Hospice care givers who knew her for just a few weeks or days exclaimed how amazing she was! She will be greatly missed.
