Framing Design Tip

Problem:
"I love an image that is too large for my space. Is it all right to cut it down?"

Solution:
It is acceptable to “crop” an open edition reproduction image for framing. I often turn an abstract another direction, or create two images out of one by cutting a large piece in half, mat and frame.

The “Right” Image

Limited Edition Reproductions
Limited edition art can ensure the owner that they will not find their image hanging on the wall in the local discount store or printed on a plate. If it is not within your budget to invest in a well known artist’s original you will want to investigate the world of limited edition art.

In art, a limited edition means that there are a limited number of images in a published edition. Once the pre-determined number of impressions are made, no more impressions are to be taken; assuring that the edition is "limited." The number of impressions in a limited edition is information that should be available to the consumer, especially if the price reflects the scarcity of the piece. Both original graphics and reproductions are offered as "limited editions" from artists and art publishers.

At the bottom of each print in an edition, the artist pencils in his signature and numbers the print. The numbering appears as one number over another, for example, 15/30. This indicates that this was the 15th print to be signed and there are a total of 30 prints in the edition.

In addition I coordinated the design of an original two story art piece! Two of the Northwest’s finest artists Walt Mendenhall, metal artist, and Gary Swanson, stained glass artist created the amazing original work incorporating colors and textures just right for the space. It is truly the focal point and delight of all who visit and work there, adding a sense of celestial whimsy to the building!

Before & After

Art, the focal point, makes the space!

Before

Can you believe it? These photos were taken of the same room. I just re-arranged the furniture and placed art and accessories. The sofa was in front of the window. The purple chair took up residence to the left and the red chair on the right. Art added color, interest, and proper scale. By creating a true focal point with the art over the fireplace, the sofa just had to be moved so that it was facing the beautiful new arrangement!
